This was a quiet day. We slept late, and spent most of the day just hanging out. We also did a little shopping - Terry bought some shoes, and we bought some liquor as a present for someone back home.
One thing that I like to do when I travel, whether in the U.S. or elsewhere, is look for different kinds of snack foods - candy bars, snack cakes, chips, etc. Of course, we saw a lot of familiar brands, but we tasted a few local varieties. One was a chocolate covered snack cake called Chocoramo, made by Productos Ramo, a Colombian snack food company which is, to quote Wikipedia, "perhaps the only independent national brand to offer serious competition to multinational brands like Frito Lay and Grupo Bimbo."
Another item of interest that I found was a snack consisting of a cookie topped with marshmallow and covered with chocolate - something similar to our Mallomars. What was particularly interesting about this item was its name - Beso de Negra, or Black Woman's Kiss. The package artwork featured, of course, a cartoon figure of a black woman. Another time, I saw a bottle of salsa called Salsa Negra. The name referred to the color of the salsa - it wasn't actually black, but it was rather dark - and the label also had a cartoon black woman. I don't think either of those products would do well in this country. Apparently, either the black population of Colombia isn't bothered by those kinds of images, or else the white population doesn't care if they are... I'm not sure which.
That evening, we took a taxi way across town, to a small nightclub called La Venta de Dulcinea:
...to see a tango show. It was a perfect setting - a small, dark crowded space with a small stage:
The tables were all decorated with quotes from Don Quixote:
There were two musicians; one played guitar, and the other played something called a bandoneon (w) , a kind of large concertina. They started with a few instrumental numbers, and then were joined by a woman singer:
...who sang quite dramatically, striking various dramatic poses. Then she called another woman up out of the audience - someone she knew, apparently - who sang a couple of songs:
Then we caught a taxi back home, and were quite amused to hear "We Will Rock You" and other 80's classic rock songs on the car radio!
And once again, we call on Google Maps to show us where we were the last couple of days:
Yeah, we got around quite a bit.
