Our last day at sea. Very little happened this day. The ship got in to port very early in the morning. We cleared customs, and took a bus back to the airport. As it happened, we were at the airport much earlier than we had planned, and so we tried to get ourselves switched to an earlier flight to Orlando. In the end, we were successful, although we did have to wait a while. This was the airplane for our Orlando flight:
This was the first commercial flight I'd taken in a plane with propellers in years!
We got to Orlando, picked up our rental car, drove to the hotel, and settled in for the night. We also had to stop at a mall and get some dog food for Robbie - some of the food that we had brought had gotten spoiled.
This was the first of our two days at Disney World. Disney World has three main sections. The Magic Kingdom is essentially Disneyland East. There was no point in our going there after having been to Disneyland in California so many times. MGM Studios is sort of the Disney World answer to Universal Studios. It would be interesting to see sometime, but not this trip.
That left Epcot Center, where we spent two days. Epcot is divided into two sections; Future World and World Showcase. Future World is a collection of science and technology exhibits, and World Showcase is sort of permanent world's fair, with exhibits from several countries.
Here's Terry at the park entrance, with the "spaceship Earth" theme building visible behind her:
...and here's a picture of the tremendous crowd lined up at the gates:
Obviously, we came on a good day. The guidebook said that we were going at one of the slowest times of the year, and it was right. However, there was another reason that there were so few people when we got there. The official park opening time is 9 AM, but the book says to get there early, they usually let you in at 8:30. Well, we got there at about 8:30, and waited until 9. But still, they didn't open the gates. They said it would be about another half an hour. It was only then that we realized that Daylight Savings Time had just ended! It was only 8:00! Oops.
We then proceeded to spend the morning seeing the various exhibits in Future World:
The Universe of Energy building
The Wonders of Life building
Inside the Wonders of Life building
The Land building
The restaurant area of The Land, where we ate lunch
The fountain inside The Land building
Terry was tired by this time, so we went back to the hotel and she took a nap. We stayed at the Peabody Hotel:
Note the duck logo on the top. Apparently, the Peabody has a family of resident ducks. The spend the day swimming in the lobby fountain, and spend the night in a special "duckal palace" (my joke) on the second floor.
We went back to Epcot for a while in the evening. Here's a picture of the fountain in the middle of the park:
We had a wonderful smorgasbord dinner at the Akershus restaurant in the Norway building:
In the evening, we saw IllumiNations, a laser light show presented in the World Showcase section of the park. It was most enjoyable. There's not much more I can say about it - there was too much happening for me to give any real sense of it in words.
