Chicago and Milwaukee

July 1 - July 10, 1994

Monday, July 4

We spent the morning at the general session:

The first speaker was a man from Spain, talking about the status of the blind in that country, and the government programs that they have to help them. The interpretation was atrocious! They should have gotten Terry to do it! He was followed by speakers from the National Library Service and Descriptive Video Service, and a blind man who told about his safari to Africa.

After lunch with Abbie Vincent, I took off for some exploring on my own. First, I headed for the Sears tower, taking some pictures along the way. On one building, I saw a mosaic by Marc Chagall:

Downtown Chicago has a number of public artworks by famous artists; there will be some more pictures later. Here's a picture of the Sears tower peeking out from behind some surrounding buildings:

...and the Chicago city flag flying outside an office building:

The Sears tower was, unfortunately, a bit of a disappointment. The visibility was low that day, and I didn't get as good a view as I otherwise would have. After I came down, I dropped into a legal off-track betting parlor and bet on a horse race. I lost.

The plaza in front of Daley plaza contains a sculpture by Picasso:

...and across the street is one by Joan Miro:

The Picasso sculpture, with its ramp and overhead criss-crossing bars, intrigued me. I climbed up on it and took these pictures from 'inside' it:

Finally, on the way back to the hotel, I took this picture of the clock outside of Marshall Fields, a famous department store:

In the evening we had dinner at the French Quarter, one of the hotel restaurants. We then went to the gospel sing-along, but found it not to our taste, and left. Ruth then came to our room and visited for a while.

I don't remember when these next two pictures were taken; they must have been taken somewhere between Monday afternoon and Wednesday evening. This picture shows the hall lobby on our floor (the ones on other floors were similarly elegant):

...and this picture shows Terry at a late afternoon wine and cheese party given by - I don't remember. The woman Terry is talking to is someone we met on the tour on Saturday; her name is Charlette, or 'Charlie.'
