Tuesday morning, Bob came over the motel and we had breakfast, and then I took off by myself, to give Bob and Terry a little time together by themselves. I just drove around for a while, picked up a birthday card for Jean, put gas in the car, etc. Then I came back to the motel and collected Terry, and we went off on another aimless drive around Columbus. We started by driving downtown, where we saw this replica of Columbus' ship, the Santa Maria:
...as well as this impressive statue, entitled "Freedom"
We then drove north, along the Scioto River, until it was time to turn around and come back. Along the way, I noticed a pile of rocks by the side of the road, and stopped to investigate. It turned out to be the gravesite of a man named Bill Moose, the last of the Wyandot Indians in Ohio, who died in 1937, just short of his 100th birthday. He was apparently a quite well known figure in the area, and his funeral was attended by a thousand people. Click here for more information.
We then drove back into town for one more dinner with Bob and Jean and Linda, at the Hickory House, a barbecue restaurant in Reynoldsburg. After saying our goodbyes, we drove back to a restaurant we had previously noticed in Pataskala, for dessert. Terry had a slice of peanut butter pie, and I stumbled on something I hadn't had for years.
There's a small candy company in Altoona, PA, called Boyer Candies. Among their products is something they call Smoothie. It's like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, but instead of chocolate, it's covered with a butterscotch flavor coating. Actually, I always thought the coating was peanut butter flavored - I only just now discovered it's actually butterscotch. Anyway, these Smoothies aren't available in California, and even when I was growing up in New Jersey, they were hard to find. So coming across them here was a special treat.
